Meet Amber Kuehn, Hilton Head Island’s awesome Sea Turtle Protection Manager.  Amber monitors the sea turtle nest along the Island’s 14 miles of beach for these federally threatened species.  Starting May 1 and ending October 31, Amber is busy making sure these nests, the baby sea turtles and their moms are safe and protected.  One of the biggest ways visitors and oceanfront owners can help is to turn off the lights on the oceanfront from 10 pm – 6 am.

Lights Out for Sea Turtles

Sea turtles make their way to the sea by the brightest light in the sky which is naturally the horizon or moon.  The lights from an oceanfront home, pool or interior can confuse these babies and their mom.  Because of this, the Town Of Hilton Head requires that lights be turned out or shielded on the oceanfront so these turtles can find their way easily to the sea.

Adopt a Sea Turtle Nest on Hilton Head Island

The best way to follow the sea turtles is to adopt a sea turtle nest.  The Coastal Discovery Museum will email you regular updates.  Click here to see past years updates.  To adopt a nest, visit the Coastal Discovery Museum or fill out this application.

Hilton Head Properties Realty and Rentals

Have fun!  Hilton Head Properties R and R adopted four nests in different areas of the Island this year for our rental guest and property owners. These four nests include Palmetto Dunes Beach, Sea Pines Beach, North Forest Beach and Singleton Beach.  We will let you know the nest number as soon as the nest is laid and recorded.  If you find one, take a photo with your phone and text or email it to us with you and your family standing in front of it.  We will mail you a Sea Turtle Sticker from the discovery museum and our HHI Bumper Sticker!
