No Bridge equals No Problems on Daufuskie Island
Hello from Daufuskie Island. Have had a number of fellow Realtors call me lately regarding “happenings” on Daufuskie. Their customers and clients showed interest and they wanted an update. With that in mind I found it might be helpful to share the following info!
Four Unique Areas on Daufuskie to choose from
- Melrose ~ Its been a very uplifting year on the Island. Melrose Resort and Spa sold after being in bankruptcy. As you might expect that was a big deal to “us locals”. The new owner has worked hard to clean up and landscape the grounds. The Melrose golf course, that never closed during bankruptcy, has new life. New equipment is on site and the greens and fairways are lush and simply gorgeous. This gem of a course built by Jack Nicklous with three (3) holes running the length of the ocean has gained state wide acclaim. The Inn is still closed but “word is” we will see activity soon.
- Bloody Point ~ The golf course is in new hands. The owner, a Melrose property owner, is working hard to clean up and landscape the grounds. The pro shop restaurant is set to open shortly and a chef has been hired. Eagles Nest Restaurant, with an impressive menu, will be a welcome addition for locals and visitors alike. The golf course is closed and in need of restoration. The fairways are being cut as of this correspondence.
- Haig Point ~ Drove though the Haig Point community yesterday. The grounds including the golf course are pristine/manicured and a sight to behold. Haig Point has always been as beautiful as when I first visited in 1986.
- Historic District is much the same as it always has been at the time of Pat Conroy. Over the summer hundreds of folks have visited the Island daily. The historic “draw” is intense and the newly marked Daufuskie Historic Trail tells the “Fuskie Story” like it should be told.
Dining Daufuskie Style
Marshside Mommas restaurant is packed on weekends with “boating vistors’ from Savannah, Bluffton and Hilton Head. If you have never had a taste of Beth’s gumbo then you simply haven’t lived. Marshside Momma’s is unquestionably one of the most unique restaurants in South Carolina. Daufuskie Crab Company/Restaurant is flourishing and has seen unbelievably activity all Summer. The perfect place to prop your feet up, grab a “cold one” and take in a laid back atmosphere that is second to none. Favorite foods are the historic Daufuskie Devil Crabs. fried baloney sandwich and a quesadilla that makes my mouth water as I write.
Daufuskie Doings
The Daufuskie Community farm is growing daily. Three (3) baby turkeys have arrived and our turkey count is now five (5). Baby Goats and heifer calf Gracie round out “the farm”, bee hives are buzzing and goat cheese is available for tasting. A great place to bring the kids for a farm “show and tell”. And I would be remiss if I didnt mention our “funky” Saturday farmers market at the county dock. Picked up a few pounds of fresh shrimp from a dockside boat this morning. YUM….
Real Estate Revival on Daufuskie
As one might expect with all this activity the real estate market has seen a very positive rebound. We have had eleven (11) homes and villas sold with three (3) pending. The low lying fruit has been picked and prices will now rise substantially. Real bargains still exist but bankrupt properties and short sales are in very “short supply”. So there you have it. A Daufuskie Island update. Its a very special place and has all the mystic and and magic that “true islands” without bridges possess. As we work our way forward your clients and customers will be definately be hearing more of our positive virtues. So when they do ask you about Daufuskie please dont “shy away”. Hope to see ya soon on a warm incoming tide.
