The Hilton Head “Tree Story”
Have you ever heard the Hilton Head Tree story? If you have never been to the Island or never heard the story it goes something like this: On Hilton Head Island we have protected our trees way before development really cranked up. Our century old live oaks, palmettos, magnolias, pines and all the other trees are considered one of the town’s most valuable assets. Hilton Head Island put in place a plan, after all, they are our breathing buddies!
Hilton Head Loves Trees
Typically trees 6″ inches or greater in diameter at 4′ of height cannot be removed arbitrarily on Hilton Head Island without prior approval. This is where the tree lady steps in, making sure our trees have a voice. Hilton Head passed a tree ordinance and put it in writing so that we all knew the rules protecting our trees. Within the private communities, covenants offer strong tree protection on Hilton Head. However inside or outside of the gates when new development takes place, an owner must submit a tree approval application. By taking these steps, Hilton Head Island has become a place where we live side by side with nature now and in the future.
